On the 28th of September 2018, 55 projects will organise their European Researchers Night in 340 cities across 27 European countries. An amazing opportunity to discuss research with citizens and show how it impacts their daily lives.
What is the European Researchers Night?
The European Researchers Night is a public event that takes place every year and promotes European research through activities aimed at engaging citizens. In 2018, the events will be on Friday, 28 September, in over 340 cities across Europe and in neighbouring countries. They are supported by the European Commission as a part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, funded under the Horizon 2020 programme.
The objective is to boost public awareness of the positive role of research in society, especially among young people. During the night, researchers interact with visitors and show how their research has an impact on people’s daily lives. The activities can be of different kinds: from hands-on experiments conducted by researchers to science shows with public participation debates. You can also meet researchers and ask them questions with a game called "researchers' dating", but also challenge other visitors with science quizzes, games, puzzles, and contests. Participants can take guided visits of labs, research institutes, and other relevant places that are usually closed to the public.
How much do citizens know about the impact of European research?
PERCEIVE Project will participate to the event organised by the University of Bologna, the project leader, called SOCIETY (How do you spell RESEARCH? SOCIETY - Science, histOry, Culture, musIc, Environment, arT, technologY), the project that brings the European Researchers' Night to Bologna.
SOCIETY wants to explore the possible intersections between science, culture and society. The goal is to present research as one of the best and most effective tools to understand, support, preserve and develop our culture, in all its nuances and variations, and to reach innovative solutions to overcome societal challenges and thus lead to a tangible improvement in the quality of daily life.
In order to raise awareness of the relevance of research, SOCIETY focuses on public involvement and co-participation in planning. As a direct result, researchers will benefit from public support and the possibility of demonstrating the importance of research in nowadays society. The event is designed to reach the general public, with a special focus on upper secondary education students and gender perspectives to encourage female participation in research careers.
This will be a great chance for our project to interact with citizens and show them the significance of our research results, through interactive games and quizzes… stay tuned!
